Discount Travel Secret: Free Museum Days 2026 Hi Reader, One of my favorite discount travel secrets is taking advantage of free museum days when I travel. Museums can be some of the most memorable stops on a trip, and when you can visit for free, it keeps your budget happy and leaves more room for food, experiences, and fun souvenirs. 🏛️✨ There is no single master list for every museum in America and every free museum day that's offered. You could ask AI, but they will pull a ton of wrong information, so if you do that, PLEASE double check directly with the museum before you go. Free days are handled on a case-by-case basis by individual museums, cities, and larger museum groups, so the best way to find them is by searching for the destination you want to visit and checking what programs are available in that area. A few national programs are always worth checking: Bank of America Museums on Us If you are a Bank of America cardholder, you get free admission to hundreds of museums across the US during select times. Blue Star Museums This is a nationwide program that offers free admission to active-duty military, National Guard, Reserve members, and their families during select times. Smithsonian Museums All Smithsonian museums in Washington DC are free every day of the year. This includes famous spots like the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of Natural History. For every other destination, here are my favorite ways to find free museum days:
This is one of my favorite ways to travel more for less. Free museum days can save you anywhere from $15 to $40 per person usually, which adds up fast on a multi-day trip. That money can go toward a nicer hotel, a special dinner, or a tour you really want to splurge on. 💸➡️🍽️🏨 If you're still not finding a free museum day that works with your schedule, the last place I'd check is Viator to see if they sell admission tickets at a discount. Usually you can save about 5%-10% on admission, which is what we did when we visited the Field Museum in Chicago. Here are just a few of our blog posts and itineraries that feature the museums we recommend visiting around the US this year (especially to celebrate America250).
