Discount Travel Secrets: Check up on your reservations

Hi Reader,

The other night I was watching the World Cup games and decided to check up on my reservations for my 2 trips this summer to see if there were any changes to make or update.

I decided to just see what the current hotel rates were to see if it helped me to book in advance or if last minute availability would be the better deal.

Spoiler alert: it was about 50/50

I have a total of 6 hotel reservations for this summer and for 3 of them I was able to find a better deal.

The other 3, well let's just be thankful I booked those MONTHS in advance because what's available now is significantly more expensive.

The moral of the story here is that it doesn't hurt to take a few minutes to check while you're not doing anything else.

Here's what I was able to get:

  1. For Friday's drive toward DC, we were able to switch from one Hampton Inn to another one about 20 miles closer for $10 less overall. So we won't have to drive as late Friday night and we're staying in a nearly identical hotel for less. Both have free parking and free breakfast.
  2. For tonight's stay in DC, we used Hilton Honors points and it was originally 57,000 points. I checked a few days ago and it had dropped to 46,000 points. I checked just one more time and it was down to 43,000 points! (Image below)
  3. For one night on our New York road trip, we were originally going to spend a night in Rochester after leaving the Finger Lakes before heading home the next day. Then we decided we wanted to stop at Niagara Falls on the way home, so we decided to rebook for a hotel in Buffalo instead. We also used points for that stay and it is 45,000 points instead of 50,000 in Rochester. This one's a Doubletree, so there's no free breakfast, but there is a free cookie!

Overall, we saved $10 and 19,000 points, which is nearly halfway to another free night πŸŽ‰

Go check on your reservations and let me know what savings you find!

See you next week,

Eva and JP πŸ’Ž
