Discount Travel Secret: Birthday Freebies

This Sunday is JP’s birthday, which made me realize it’s the perfect time to talk about one of my favorite travel topics, birthday freebies.

Whether you’re traveling for your birthday or staying close to home, there are so many easy perks you can take advantage of if you plan just a little ahead.

One of my top blog posts of all time is my Las Vegas birthday freebies guide.

While it’s Vegas-focused, a lot of the freebies in that post are from national chains that exist all over the country.

Even if you’re not heading to Vegas, there’s a good chance you can still use several of those offers wherever you live or wherever you’re traveling.

A quick heads-up that most people don’t realize:

For many birthday freebies, you need to be signed up for the company’s rewards program before your birthday month.

If your birthday is January 31, you typically need to sign up in December to qualify.

Waiting until your birthday month is often too late.

Also, hardly any rewards programs require you to have made any purchases in order to redeem your rewards.

Most of the places I get my birthday freebies from I've never bought anything there ever, I just collect my birthday freebie every August.

For my birthday this past year, here are a few of the freebies we used (and loved):

• Insomnia Cookies – free cookie
• Buffalo Wild Wings – 6 boneless wings
• Panera – any pastry of your choice
• Several escape rooms – free admission for the birthday person
• Graeter’s Ice Cream – a free birthday sundae
• Sephora - free sample sized product
• Ulta - free sample sized product
• Starbucks - free drink

My personal favorite every single year is Landry’s Select Club.

You get $25 to use at one of their restaurants for your birthday.

This year we used it at McCormick & Schmick’s, and in the past we’ve used it at Morton’s, Claim Jumper, Bubba Gump, Joe’s Crab Shack, and more.

One last birthday travel tip:

If you’re traveling for your birthday, always mention it in your hotel reservation notes.

Let them know you’re celebrating a birthday or that it’s a birthday trip.

It’s never guaranteed, but upgrades, treats, or small surprises only happen if they know.

I used to work at the front desk for Hilton and we checked the notes every single day for new check-ins and always did what we could to help!
